Cannonhead is a Montreal based rap group comprised of rapper/producers Freddie "Five" de Andrade (Mikael Larsson) and Spin (Jay Newcomen). Entirely self produced; their sound is a plethora of influences ranging from 1996 rap verses (Jay-Z, Outkast), drugs (Amy Winehouse, Supercat) to Montreal’s own sonically-indulgent indie music culture (Arcade Fire, Dears). Unlike most experimentally leaning Hip Hop music, the songs flirt with radio ready choruses and rap-hero-level rhyming.

"The influence of hip-hop is undeniable, but so is the band’s refusal to be limited by it.
- Rima Hammoudi. Roverarts.com

Preparing for the release of their as-yet-untitled sophomore LP, Cannonhead have hit a career high. Their debut record "We Can Be Silent Now" accrued over 3,500 downloads, several hyperbole-laden reviews and healthy Canadian college radio play. Their remix to Ellie Goulding's "Lights" received over 20,000 listens and introduced them to a whole new world of electronic music fans. And most recently, the release of the Kristof Brandl-shot /Nevada Badlands set video for first single “Thank You For the Lift” has been received enthusiastically, being featured on major Canadian blogs such as Exclaim.ca and Elementality.com.

"(Cannonhead) bursts from the seams with real musicianship, and you can hear the finesse, the work put into the production."

For a new band, Cannonhead’s Freddie Five and Spin are far from new. While part of Montreal mainstay Velvet Trench Vibes they enjoyed local success. They recorded a nationally aired promo for the MuchVibe music video channel, opened for such acts as Talib Kweli, K-os, Raekwon, Wu-Tang Clan, The Cool Kids, Masta Ace, Souls of Mischief, and were regularly voted to the top of the Montreal Mirror’s Best Of Montreal polls in the categories of Best Rap Act, Best Live Performance and; Most Pretentious.
